Pancake Warmers 2018
Welderlies Pancake Warmers
13th February 2018
One of the suggestions at the Welderlies Shades of Autumn held in October 2017 was for us to continue celebrating themed seasonal events.
So, this third event was our first Welderlies Pancake Warmers held on 13th February 2018, Shrove Tuesday, a day in the seasonal calendar when it is a tradition to eat pancakes. The word ‘warmers’ was added to highlight the fact that warm refreshments like tea and soups will be provided as part of the refreshments as it was held during late winter and early spring. Held at St Michaels and All Angel’s Church Hall, Poplar Walk it was well attended by 68 adults and 5 youngsters.
Highlights included:
- Pancake quiz
- New Pancake Dance developed specially for Welderlies by Bump Dance and Fitness
- First Pancake Race for which attractive prizes were distributed
- Serving pancakes with different toppings

We were fortunate to have Deborah Causer, the Lead on Diabetes at Croydon Clinical Commissioning Group, CCG, to create more awareness and facilitate discussion on the subject. The discussion was rich as quite a number of attendees shared their stories. She was accompanied by a representative from Diabetes UK Croydon support group, who also shared their experience.
This was what Deborah had to say in response to my ‘thank you note’
“Thanks, Sylvia – I really enjoyed the event and well done for pulling such a successful afternoon together. It’s a shame we couldn’t stay for the pancake race!…..We heard some powerful experiences which show how important it is to get this right and it would be influential to share those with a wider audience”.
